Getting Families to Talk About Money

Written By Brendan Ryan, CFA

Advisor Turntable Podcast: Episode 8

Your Client’s Financial Plan Is a Family Affair

For many families, money is still something they simply don’t talk about.

That can leave children unprepared for what happens when their parents die, create unnecessary complications around an estate and, for advisors, mean meeting the next generation for the first time only after the assets are ready to transfer.

Financial advisor Traci Garnett-Froscheiser takes a different approach. Family financial conversations are built into her firm’s regular client process—from reviewing beneficiaries annually to bringing children into the office for their first lessons on investing.

In this episode of the Advisor Turntable Podcast, Traci shares practical ways advisors can help start these conversations without forcing clients to disclose every dollar or detail. She also explains how advisors can become the central point connecting generations, attorneys, tax professionals and other members of a client’s financial team.

The result can be better preparation for families today and a relationship with the next generation built on trust long before they need someone to call for financial help.
